iPhone Available in Ireland

I have to eat some humble pie here ... I wrote this post a few days ago after reading a lot of negative press on the iPhone.

Today I got to try one out for a few minutes after one of our the team bought one up in Newry over the weekend.

Now I have to eat humble pie ... I will be buying an iPhone and the iPhone WILL change how we use the internet!

There is still a major issue with O2 Ireland, it's pricing and inability to provide some of the services the phone can take advantage of but there is no doubt the iPhone, once you use one, is a smart, fast, easy and useful piece of technology.

It will change the world...the Internet IS truly mobile!

I am a Apple Mac user and have been waiting to get my hands on the iPhone once it arrived here. Not just because I'm an Apple user but because of the ground breaking design of the phone as well as the possibility that devices like the iPhone and development like Google's Android project to be the catalyst for change in the mobile internet market.

BUT .. I've been following many blogs and discussions since O2 Ireland's launch announcement but Damien Mulley's post sums it up well... Thanks but no thanks!

No 3G, No video recording, No Visual Voicemail, Bandwidth and Wi-Fi restrictions .. not exactly the way to promote usage and innovation in the market!

Pay through the ... phone?

Recent research by Juniper Research has concluded that within the next 4 years over 50 million people worldwide will use their mobile phones for online purchases. The payment market is expected to be a staggering 8 billion Euro! Various technologies such as Near Field Communication will enable payments to be completed using just your mobile phone; replacing the need to carry around cash or a credit card. At least you have 4 years to figure out what to do with your soon-to-be-obsolete wallet/purse/moth incubator.

Apple iPhone vs. Google GPhone

Love it or hate it, Apple's trendy new iPhone is taking some selected countries around the world by storm. In anticipation of the expected deluge of customer queries O2 UK has employed an additional 1427 staff, including sales and support staff. Not too bad for one single product in the veritable sea of mobile handsets. I guess Apple will be on a few more peoples' Christmas list this year. Now we just have to await a release date for the rest of us.

But while the iPhone is here (sort of) the Google behemoth hasn't been resting on it laurels. Back in 2005 Google bought out a company called Android. After seemingly endless speculation about Google's own handset, nicknamed the "GPhone", last month the search engine masters announced instead an open source operating system and programming framework for mobile devices. The system is being supported by a consortium of some of the world's mobile phone and technology heavyweights such as Motorola, LG, Samsung, NTT DoCoMo and Intel. "What exactly does that mean to me?" you may ask. That's a good question. Right now, not much, but in the next few years, probably a whole lot! Starting from around the middle of next year handsets running the new operating system will start popping up all over the place. Because the system is open it will allow programmers from around the world to create some really cool applications that you can install on your phone; programs that are useful to YOU! Expect your phone to go from being simply a text messaging reader to a complete lifestyle device. Captain Kirk is going to be so jealous.
